Jean Arp

Jean Arp, also known as Hans Arp, was a German-French artist born in 1886 who worked in sculpture, relief, collage, poetry, and drawing. He died in 1966 and was a major figure in Dada and later abstract art.

For his chance collages, Arp tore or cut paper shapes, dropped them onto a support, and accepted their positions rather than composing every element deliberately. The method challenged traditional ideas of artistic control and rational design.

Yes, Arp participated in the founding circle of Zurich's Cabaret Voltaire in 1916, alongside artists including Hugo Ball and Tristan Tzara. The venue became one of the key birthplaces of the Dada movement.

Arp developed smooth, organic, often ovoid forms inspired by natural growth and chance rather than strict geometric construction. His artistic partnership with Sophie Taeuber-Arp also shaped the development of his abstract reliefs and compositions.
