Barbara Hepworth

Barbara Hepworth was a British sculptor who lived from 1903 to 1975. She became a major figure in modern abstract sculpture through carved stone, cast bronze, and works that explore space and movement.

She worked extensively with stone and bronze, often creating smooth biomorphic forms with pierced openings or taut internal strings. The contrast between solid material and empty space is central to many of her sculptures.

Hepworth lived and worked in St Ives, Cornwall, which became an important center for British modern art. Her former studio and garden, now the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, preserve the environment where many works were made.

Her outdoor works use light, landscape, and changing viewpoints as active parts of the experience. Pieces such as Single Form show how a large abstract sculpture can function both as an object and as a marker within public space.
