Jerry Norman

Jerry Norman was an American linguist and sinologist known for his influential research on Min Chinese dialects, Chinese historical phonology, and the Manchu language. His work on classifying and reconstructing Min varieties helped establish their critical importance for understanding earlier stages of Chinese.

He was a professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington, where he trained generations of students in Chinese linguistics and Manchu studies. The University of Washington has long been a major center for Chinese historical linguistics in North America.

He was one of relatively few Western scholars to conduct serious linguistic work on Manchu, the language of the Qing dynasty imperial court, including research on its phonology and historical development. His scholarship helped preserve scholarly access to Manchu as a source for understanding Qing-era history and Tungusic linguistics.

Min dialects, spoken mainly in Fujian province and Taiwan, preserve archaic phonological features that have been lost in most other Chinese varieties. Norman's comparative classification of Min subgroups provided a framework that linguists still use to reconstruct earlier stages of Chinese and understand how the language diversified over centuries.
