Johan Fritzner

Johan Fritzner was a 19th-century Norwegian lexicographer who created Ordbog over det gamle norske Sprog, a comprehensive dictionary of Old Norse. His extensive work remains a monumental contribution to historical linguistics. It is still heavily utilized today by scholars studying early Scandinavian languages.

Fritzner's dictionary primarily focuses on Old Norse, the language spoken by inhabitants of Scandinavia during the Viking Age and medieval periods. The three-volume work was a massive undertaking that documented the language spoken from the 9th to the 14th centuries. It helped standardize the understanding of early Norwegian texts.

Fritzner published the first edition of his Old Norse dictionary in 1867. He continued to expand the work, with later, expanded editions being published in the 1880s and 1890s. The dictionary has since been digitized and remains a crucial tool for modern scholars.

Fritzner's dictionary represents a significant contribution to historical linguistics because it systematically organized a massive vocabulary of Old Norse words and their definitions. Before his work, studying early Scandinavian texts was vastly more difficult. His detailed cross-referencing of historical texts preserved the etymology of ancient words.
