Joseph Wolpe was a South African-born psychiatrist and an important figure in the development of behavior therapy. He formulated systematic desensitization, a treatment in which relaxation or another response incompatible with anxiety is paired with gradual exposure to feared situations, often organized as a hierarchy. His work helped establish learning-based methods for treating phobias and other anxiety problems and influenced later forms of exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral treatment.
