Joyce Marcus

Joyce Marcus has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, particularly at the Zapotec site of Monte Albán. She has also worked at Maya sites and collaborated closely with archaeologist Kent Flannery on long-term projects examining the origins of social complexity in Mesoamerica.

Marcus co-authored 'Zapotec Civilization: How Urban Society Evolved in Mexico's Oaxaca Valley' (1996) and co-edited 'The Cloud People: Divergent Evolution of the Zapotec and Mixtec Civilizations' (1983), both with Kent Flannery. These works are foundational references for students of Mesoamerican archaeology.

Joyce Marcus is a faculty member at the University of Michigan, where she is associated with the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology. Her position at Michigan places her within one of the leading departments for anthropological archaeology in the United States.

Marcus is best known for her analyses of ancient Zapotec and Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions, using monument texts to reconstruct political organization and dynastic succession. Her research demonstrated how rulers used writing and monumental art to legitimize political authority in early Mesoamerican states.
