description Jože Plečnik Overview
Jože Plečnik (1872–1957) was a Slovenian architect who trained in Vienna under Otto Wagner before establishing his practice in Prague and Ljubljana. Between 1920 and 1934 he renovated Prague Castle at the invitation of President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, redesigning its gardens, courtyards, and ceremonial spaces. After returning to Ljubljana, he reshaped the city through works including the Triple Bridge, the National and University Library, and the Žale Cemetery. His architecture blends classical forms with modernist sensibility and draws on Slovenian and central European craft traditions.
