Julius Hemphill

description Julius Hemphill Overview

Julius Arthur Hemphill was an American jazz composer and saxophonist known for his work on the alto saxophone. In 1976, he co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet, an acclaimed ensemble that performed without a rhythm section and helped define the modern jazz avant-garde. Before his move to New York, Hemphill was a central figure in the Black Artists Group (BAG), a multidisciplinary arts collective in St. Louis, Missouri, active during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

His compositions often integrated elements of free jazz, blues, and classical music.

help Julius Hemphill FAQ

What was unusual about Julius Hemphill's World Saxophone Quartet?

Hemphill co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet in 1976 with Hamiet Bluiett, Oliver Lake, and David Murray. The ensemble used multiple saxophones without a conventional piano, bass, or drum rhythm section.

Which Julius Hemphill album is a good starting point?

Dogon A.D., recorded in the early 1970s, is commonly treated as a landmark of Hemphill's catalog. Its title piece combines an unusual rhythmic foundation with open improvisation and Hemphill's forceful alto saxophone.

How did Julius Hemphill's theater work affect his music?

Hemphill worked across composition, performance, theater, and multimedia rather than treating jazz as a purely instrumental form. His St. Louis years connected him with the Black Artists Group, an interdisciplinary collective active in music, drama, dance, and visual art.

Why did Julius Hemphill leave the World Saxophone Quartet?

Hemphill stopped performing with the group around 1990 as illness increasingly limited his ability to play. He continued composing, and the World Saxophone Quartet remained closely identified with pieces he had written and arranged.
