description Kaabu Empire Overview
Kaabu, also called Gabu, was a Mandinka-ruled state in the Senegambia region of West Africa. It began as a western province or military outpost of the Mali Empire in the 13th century and later developed into an important regional polity after Mali's power declined. Its capital, Kansala, fell to forces from Futa Jallon and allied Fula groups in 1867, an event commonly treated as the end of the Kaabu state, although successor kingdoms continued in the region.
