The Toungoo Empire was a Burmese state that grew from the Toungoo dynasty's base at Taungoo in the early sixteenth century. Mingyi Nyo established the Toungoo principality in 1510, Tabinshwehti reunified much of Burma, and his successor Bayinnaung expanded the realm across large parts of mainland Southeast Asia, including territories in present-day Myanmar and Thailand. After Bayinnaung's death in 1581, the empire fragmented.
