Kate Monster

Kate Monster is a leading puppet character in *Avenue Q*, the hit Broadway musical that opened at the John Golden Theatre in 2003. The show is a satirical take on *Sesame Street*, focusing on the lives of puppet and human characters living in an outer-borough New York neighborhood. It famously won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2004.

Kate is a kindergarten teaching assistant who dreams of opening a school for monsters. Throughout the musical, she navigates a romantic relationship with the main character, Princeton, alongside themes of purpose and prejudice. Her heartfelt and comedic songs, including a famous sequence with Lucy the Slut, drive much of the show's emotional core.

The role of Kate Monster was originated by actress and puppeteer Stephanie D'Abruzzo in 2003. Her acclaimed performance earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. D'Abruzzo famously voiced both Kate Monster and the sultry Lucy the Slut in the original Broadway cast.

While some of the puppets in *Avenue Q*, like Rod, are parodies of specific *Sesame Street* characters, Kate Monster represents an original, everyday character meant to represent a naive young adult. She is a live-hand puppet, requiring two puppeteers to operate her arms during certain musical numbers. Her design and personality deliberately echo classic children's television characters while dealing with adult themes.
