description Kekkaishi Overview

Yoshimura Sumimura comes from a long line of "Kekkaishi," individuals who have supernatural abilities and are able to destroy evil creatures called Ayakashi that venture into the human realm from time to time. The Ayakashi are demons that look to feast on the power emanating from the land of Karasumori, which also happens to be where Yoshimura's high school is located. Now, Yoshimura must fight to protect his beloved school and hometown. Although, if it were up to him, he would rather be baking cakes than fighting off the ugly characters that show up at night.

Thankfully, Yoshimura isn't the only one helping to keep the baddies at bay.

help Kekkaishi FAQ

What are Kekkaishi powers in the anime?

Kekkaishi are individuals who use a technique called Nenshi to create spiritual barriers called Kekkai. They use these cubes or spheres to trap and destroy Ayakashi (demons) that are drawn to the Karasumori site. The two main characters, Yoshimori and Tokine, use this ability to protect their school, which is built on sacred ground.

How many episodes does the Kekkaishi anime have?

The anime adaptation consists of 52 episodes. It was produced by Sunrise and covers a significant portion of the original manga by Yellow Tanabe. However, the anime ends before the manga's final story arcs are resolved, leaving several major plot threads open.

What are the main weapons used in Kekkaishi?

Aside from their Kekkai barriers, the protagonists use specialized tools like the Shikigami (paper familiars) and a landlord spirit named Lord Uro who governs the dimension of the Karasumori site. Yoshimori also creates a massive, specialized castle-like Kekkai called the Shinkai later in the series. They utilize land lords, grills, and contract spirits.

Is Kekkaishi related to Bleach or Naruto?

While Kekkaishi is a supernatural shonen anime that aired around the same time as Bleach, it is not related in terms of plot or universe. It ran on Adult Swim's Toonami block in the late 2000s, directly appealing to fans of action anime like Naruto. It stands apart due to its focus on spatial manipulation (barriers) rather than sword fighting.
