Xerxes I was an Achaemenid Persian king who ruled from 486 to 465 BCE. He is known for leading the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BCE, a campaign that included the battles of Thermopylae and Salamis. Ancient sources also associate him with large imperial building projects at Persepolis, where construction continued on the monumental royal complex begun by his predecessor Darius I.
