Kitakyushu is a designated city in Fukuoka Prefecture at the northern tip of Japan's Kyushu island, facing the Kanmon Strait and the city of Shimonoseki. It was formed in 1963 through the merger of Moji, Kokura, Tobata, Yahata, and Wakamatsu. The city developed around its port, manufacturing, and the Yahata Steel Works, and it remains an important transport and industrial link between Kyushu and Honshu.
