Ulyanovsk is the administrative capital of Ulyanovsk Oblast in western Russia, located on the Volga River near its confluence with the Sviyaga River. Founded as Simbirsk in the seventeenth century, it was renamed in 1924 after Vladimir Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, who was born there in 1870. The city is an industrial and transportation center associated particularly with aircraft and automobile manufacturing, and it contains museums devoted to Lenin and local history.
