description Kulunda Steppe Overview
The Kulunda Steppe, also called the Kulunda Plain, is an alluvial plain between the Ob and Irtysh rivers in the southern West Siberian Plain. It extends mainly across Russia's Altai Krai and into northern Kazakhstan, with steppe grasslands, saline lakes, pine-covered depressions, and a strongly continental climate. Much of the region has been converted to cropland and is an important agricultural area of western Siberia.
