Kumbum Stupa

The Kumbum Stupa, also known as the Palcho Chorten, is located within the Palcho Monastery in Gyantse, Tibet. Gyantse is a historic town in the Shigatse Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The monument is one of the most unique and important religious sites in Tibetan Buddhism.

Commissioned in 1427, the structure is uniquely designed as a massive three-dimensional mandala. Instead of a single solid structure, it is a tiered building that pilgrims can physically enter and explore. It features 77 distinct chapels arrayed along a spiraling, labyrinthine path leading to the top.

The 77 chapels within the 1427 monument are filled with thousands of ancient Tibetan Buddhist murals and statues. The artwork represents a stunning fusion of Tibetan, Nepalese, and Chinese artistic styles. The stupa functions as a massive, physical repository of Buddhist iconography.

In Tibetan, the word "Kumbum" translates to "100,000 images," directly referring to the vast number of Buddhist murals and statues contained within the structure. The name reflects the sheer scale of the devotional art commissioned in 1427. Pilgrims visit the stupa specifically to view and interact with these accumulated sacred images.
