Ladakh Cold Desert

The Ladakh Cold Desert is a high-altitude desert located in the northern Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. It sits at a very high altitude between the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges.

The region is classified as a desert because the massive Himalayan range blocks rain clouds from entering, placing it in a strict rain shadow. This geographical feature results in extremely low annual precipitation, creating an arid landscape.

The region experiences extreme temperature variations, with brutally cold winters where temperatures can drop to -20 degrees Celsius or lower. Due to the high altitude, the air is very thin, and UV radiation is intense during the summer.

Despite the harsh climate, the region is home to unique wildlife adapted to the cold, such as the snow leopard and the Tibetan wild ass (kiang). These animals survive by foraging on the sparse, hardy vegetation found across the region.
