It consists of the Kubuqi Desert to the north and the Mu Us Sandy Land to the south, with underlying geology that holds substantial coal and natural gas reserves. The surrounding Ordos municipality has undergone extensive urban development, including the Kangbashi district, a planned city built from the early 2000s.
