Laguna Madre is a shallow hypersaline lagoon system extending along the Gulf Coast of Texas into northeastern Mexico. The lagoon is approximately 130 miles long and separated from the Gulf of Mexico by Padre Island, one of the world's longest barrier islands. Laguna Madre is one of only six hypersaline lagoon systems globally and supports significant populations of fish, birds, and seagrass beds. The Texas portion includes the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, which provides habitat for endangered species.
