Lake Kasumigaura is the second-largest lake in Japan, located in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It covers a surface area of approximately 220 square kilometers and is situated near the Pacific Ocean. Historically a brackish lake, it was transformed into a freshwater body following the closure of a tidal gate in 1963. Today, it is a vital site for local inland freshwater fisheries and various recreational water sports.
