description Lake Mariout Overview
Lake Mariout is a shallow brackish lake in northern Egypt, immediately southwest of Alexandria and separated from the Mediterranean by the narrow strip of land on which Alexandria stands. It is one of Egypt's northern coastal lakes and receives agricultural drainage and urban wastewater, factors that have affected its water quality and fisheries. The lake was much larger in the early twentieth century, when it covered about 200 square kilometres; modern accounts place its area at roughly 50 square kilometres after drainage and urban development.
