Lake Poyang

Lake Poyang in Jiangxi Province fluctuates drastically between the wet and dry seasons due to the regional monsoon climate and its connection to the Yangtze River. During the dry winter months, the lake's water levels drop so low that its surface area can shrink to a fraction of its summer peak.

The lake serves as a critical wintering habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, most notably the highly endangered Siberian crane. Up to 98% of the world's remaining Siberian crane population relies on the lake's wetland ecosystem to survive the winter.

At its peak water levels during the summer, Lake Poyang is indeed China's largest freshwater lake. However, because its size fluctuates so heavily over the year, its area can vary from over 3,000 square kilometers down to less than 200 square kilometers.

Boat tours are available, but navigation routes heavily depend on the season and current water levels due to the dramatic shrinking of the lake. Visitors often depart from areas near the city of Jiujiang to view the vast wetlands and the bird watching sanctuaries.
