description Lake Saroma Overview
Lake Saroma is the largest lagoon and the third-largest lake in Japan, located on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido along the Sea of Okhotsk. It is a brackish body of water separated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar, with two artificial channels allowing tidal exchange. The nutrient-rich waters make it a critical aquaculture hub, particularly for the cultivation of scallops and oysters. During winter, the area experiences the arrival of drift ice from the sea.
