Lake Shala

description Lake Shala Overview

Lake Shala is a deep volcanic caldera lake in Ethiopia's Great Rift Valley, situated within Abijata-Shala Lakes National Park in the Oromia Region. It is the deepest of the Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes, with recorded depths exceeding 260 m, and its water is alkaline and saline due to volcanic inputs. Active shoreline hot springs along its crater rim contribute warm, mineral-rich water, while the surrounding cliffs serve as nesting sites for great white pelicans and other colonial waterbirds.
