Leksell used the word because focused radiation could destroy a precisely selected intracranial target in a single planned procedure. The stereotactic frame supplied coordinates, allowing many beams to converge while limiting exposure outside the target.
Did Lars Leksell invent the Gamma Knife by himself?
Leksell developed the concept with physicist and radiobiologist Börje Larsson, and Ladislau Steiner also contributed to its clinical development. Their work in Sweden combined stereotactic neurosurgery with tightly focused gamma radiation.
