description Leningrad Zoo Overview
Leningrad Zoo is a zoological park in central Saint Petersburg, Russia, founded in 1865 as a private menagerie. It retains much of its historic late-nineteenth-century layout and remains known by the name adopted when the city was called Leningrad. During the Siege of Leningrad in World War II, staff continued caring for animals, and the zoo reopened in spring 1942 after one wartime closure.
