Its relatively wide tip makes it suitable for creating the thick and thin strokes characteristic of formal scripts like Foundational, Italic, and Gothic hands. It is manufactured by the British company Leonardt & Company, which has produced pen nibs since the 19th century.

The Leonardt 40 is often compared to other broad-edge nibs like the Mitchell Round Hand nibs and the Brause bandzug nibs, which serve similar calligraphic purposes.
