Leptospermum scoparium

*Leptospermum scoparium*, widely known as mānuka or New Zealand tea tree, is an evergreen shrub native to New Zealand and southeastern Australia. In New Zealand, it is a pioneer species that rapidly colonizes disturbed land, thriving in harsh environments. It is deeply woven into the cultural and ecological history of these regions.

The nectar from the flowers of the mānuka shrub produces mānuka honey, which is globally renowned for its potent antimicrobial properties. The honey contains high levels of methylglyoxal (MGO), a compound that gives it unique, highly sought-after antibacterial qualities. Because of these medical and nutritional benefits, mānuka honey commands premium prices on the international market.

In addition to honey, *Leptospermum scoparium* is steam-distilled to produce mānuka essential oil, which is commercially valuable for its antiviral and antifungal properties. The oil is heavily utilized in the cosmetic, skincare, and natural health industries. It is often marketed as a more potent alternative to Australian tea tree oil for treating skin conditions.

The plant earned the nickname "tea tree" in the 18th century when explorers like Captain Cook used its leaves to brew a spicy tea to prevent scurvy. While it shares a common name with the unrelated Australian tea tree (*Melaleuca alternifolia*), both plants produce aromatic essential oils. The scientific name *Leptospermum scoparium* reflects its slender seeds and broom-like appearance.
