Liber Floridus

The Liber Floridus was compiled in the early twelfth century by Lambert, a canon of the Church of Our Lady in Saint-Omer, in what is now northern France. Lambert assembled the encyclopedia over many years, drawing on a wide range of sources available to him in the monastic and cathedral libraries of medieval Flanders.

The Liber Floridus assembles extracts on biblical history, chronology, geography, astronomy, natural history, and many other subjects from numerous earlier authorities. It is essentially a florilegium—a gathering of texts—intended as a compendium of universal knowledge for an educated medieval audience.

The autograph manuscript compiled by Lambert himself is preserved in the University Library of Ghent, Belgium, as MS 92. Several later copies produced in the medieval period are held in other European libraries, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

The Liber Floridus is significant because it preserves extracts from older texts and maps that have since been lost, making it a valuable source for understanding medieval knowledge systems. Its maps, astronomical diagrams, and bestiary illustrations provide insight into how educated clerics in the 12th century organized and visualized information about the world.
