Loetz Papillon Vase

Loetz glass is iridescent art glass produced by the Loetz Witwe (Loetz Widow) glassworks, located in Klostermühle in Bohemia, in what is now the Czech Republic. The company was one of the leading European art glass manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was a direct competitor of Tiffany Studios in the iridescent glass market.

'Papillon' is the French word for butterfly, and it refers to the distinctive butterfly-wing iridescence that characterizes this Loetz décor type. The surface features irregular patches of contrasting metallic colors—often gold, blue, green, and orange—that shimmer and shift depending on the angle of light.

Loetz Papillon vases were manufactured primarily around 1900, during the peak of the Art Nouveau period. This was the era of Loetz's greatest commercial and artistic success, when its iridescent glass was exhibited at world's fairs and exported throughout Europe and the United States.

Both Loetz Papillon and Tiffany Favrile are iridescent art glasses produced around the same period, but Loetz pieces are generally characterized by a more pronounced, mottled butterfly-wing effect, while Tiffany Favrile tends toward smoother, more uniform iridescent surfaces. Loetz glass was produced in Bohemia and was a major competitor of Tiffany's, with some Loetz designs achieving a level of technical brilliance that rivaled or surpassed contemporary Tiffany production.
