description Long Sand (Thames Estuary) Overview
Long Sand is a tidally influenced sandbank in the outer Thames Estuary and the adjoining southern North Sea. It is a broad, northeast-southwest aligned bank about 33 kilometers long, with a crest close to sea level and some areas that can dry at low water. Strong currents and migrating sandwaves continually change its shape, so the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office periodically resurveys the area to assess seabed movement and effects on deep-water shipping routes.
