description Varne Bank Overview
Varne Bank, also called Varne Shoal, is a shallow sandbank in the Strait of Dover, about 9 miles southwest of Dover, England. The bank is roughly 5.75 miles long and lies close to an international traffic separation scheme used by ships crossing the English Channel. Its shallow water and position in a busy route make it a navigation hazard, with documented groundings and wrecks in its vicinity. Trinity House has maintained the Varne Lightvessel there since 1860.
