Frying Pan Shoals

description Frying Pan Shoals Overview

Frying Pan Shoals is an extensive shallow-water shoal system off Cape Fear on the North Carolina coast, near the entrance to the Cape Fear River. The shoals extend offshore and create a navigation hazard for vessels approaching the river, which is why the area has been marked by navigational aids, including the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower. The feature is a marine sandbank rather than an island or surfaced reef. [NOAA Coast Pilot](https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/publications/coast-pilot/files/cp4/CPB4_C05_WEB.pdf).
