description Maplin Sands Overview
Maplin Sands is an intertidal area of sandbanks and mudflats in the Thames Estuary off the coast of Essex, England. The place is associated with Alexander Mitchell's screw-pile lighthouse, whose foundation system was tested there in 1838. Screw piles use helical plates to anchor a structure in soft seabed, so the site is relevant to the history of marine and civil engineering as well as to the geography of the estuary.
