Longnose Lancetfish

description Longnose Lancetfish Overview

The longnose lancetfish (Alepisaurus ferox) is a large predatory fish found in mesopelagic and epipelagic waters of all tropical and temperate oceans. Adults can reach over 2 meters in length. The species is distinguished by its long, high dorsal fin that runs along much of its back, large fang-like teeth, and an elongated, slender body. Lancetfish are hermaphroditic and have poorly understood ecology, frequently appearing as bycatch in tuna longline fisheries.

insights Ranking position

help Longnose Lancetfish FAQ

Why does the longnose lancetfish have such a large dorsal fin?

Alepisaurus ferox carries a tall, sail-like dorsal fin along much of its back. The fin can be folded into a groove, and it likely contributes to maneuvering and display in the open ocean.

What do longnose lancetfish eat?

They are opportunistic predators that swallow fishes, squid, crustaceans, and sometimes other lancetfish. Scientists frequently study their stomach contents because the prey can remain unusually well preserved.

Can people eat longnose lancetfish?

They are caught as bycatch in longline fisheries, but their soft, watery flesh gives them little conventional commercial value. A specimen can approach 2 meters in length despite not being a familiar market fish.

Where are longnose lancetfish found?

The species occurs through temperate and tropical parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. It inhabits open water from near the surface into the mesopelagic zone and also makes substantial vertical movements.
