Lovrijenac Fortress

description Lovrijenac Fortress Overview

Lovrijenac Fortress, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, is a detached fortification perched on a 37-meter sea cliff just outside the main city walls of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Originally constructed in the 11th century to prevent Venetian forces from establishing a stronghold commanding the city's harbor, it served as a crucial defensive point. The fortress features an irregular layout adapted to the shape of the rock, with its seaward walls reaching up to 12 meters in thickness.

It is renowned as a historical landmark and is famously used as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones.

help Lovrijenac Fortress FAQ

Why is Lovrijenac called Dubrovnik's Gibraltar?

The fortress stands on a steep rock about 37 meters above the Adriatic, controlling the western approaches to Dubrovnik. Its isolated position and massive seaward defenses inspired the comparison with Gibraltar.

What does the inscription above Lovrijenac's entrance mean?

The Latin motto Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro means that liberty is not sold for all the gold in the world. It expresses the political identity of the former Republic of Ragusa.

Was Lovrijenac used as a Game of Thrones location?

Yes. The fortress appeared as part of King's Landing, notably representing the Red Keep during scenes connected with the Battle of Blackwater.

Why are Lovrijenac's landward walls thinner than its seaward walls?

The seaward defenses had to withstand attack from ships, so they were built extremely thick. The wall facing Dubrovnik was deliberately thinner, allowing the city to fire into the fort if an enemy ever captured it.
