Lyda D. Newman was an African American hairdresser and inventor associated with New York City. In 1898 she received a United States patent for an improved hairbrush whose bristles could be removed from the brush body, allowing the interior to be cleaned and the bristle section to be replaced. Her invention addressed a practical problem in personal grooming and is often included in histories of African American inventors and women's contributions to consumer-product design.
