Magellanic Tundra

The Magellanic Tundra is a subantarctic ecoregion located at the southern tip of South America. It spans across both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia.

The region is characterized by wind-swept moorlands, extensive peatbogs, and the margins of beech forests. These features are shaped by the harsh, cold climate typical of the subantarctic zone.

The climate is heavily influenced by the nearby ocean and the strong westerly winds, resulting in consistently cold temperatures and high precipitation year-round. This severe environment prevents the growth of tall trees in the open tundra areas.

Vegetation in this ecoregion is dominated by hardy, low-growing plants adapted to the severe wind and cold. Common plant life includes various species of mosses, lichens, cushion plants, and sedges that thrive in the wet peatbogs.
