Lago General Carrera

Lago General Carrera is located in Patagonia, straddling the border between Chile and Argentina. It covers a total surface area of approximately 1,850 square kilometers, making it the largest lake in Chile and the fourth largest in Argentina. In Argentina, the lake is officially known as Lago Buenos Aires.

The Marble Caves, located on a peninsula known as Marble Point, were sculpted by over 6,200 years of waves washing against calcium carbonate rock. The water of Lago General Carrera is fed by glacial runoff, and the gentle erosion has carved out smooth, swirling patterns into the cavern walls. The unique colors reflect the vibrant blue and turquoise waters of the lake.

Tourists typically visit Lago General Carrera for boat or kayak tours to explore the famous Marble Caves. The surrounding Patagonian landscape also offers world-class trout and salmon fishing, as the lake's cold glacial waters are an ideal habitat for these species. The nearby town of Puerto Río Tranquilo serves as the main hub for these tourist excursions.

The waters of Lago General Carrera are shared between Chile and Argentina, following a boundary treaty established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On the Chilean side it is called General Carrera Lake, and on the Argentine side it is known as Buenos Aires Lake. The lake's primary outlet is the Baker River on the Chilean side, which flows into the Pacific Ocean.
