Scoresby Sund

Scoresby Sund is the largest fjord system in the world, with its main body extending over 110 kilometers inland from the coast and a total branching network covering an enormous area of eastern Greenland. The system includes multiple subsidiary fjords and branches, creating a coastline longer than many small countries.

Scoresby Sund is located on the east coast of Greenland, opening into the Greenland Sea and the Arctic Ocean. The nearest significant settlement is Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote inhabited places on Earth, with a population of only a few hundred people.

The fjord is named after the English whaler and explorer William Scoresby, who mapped portions of the Greenland coast in 1822. Scoresby was also a scientist who made important contributions to Arctic navigation, magnetism, and oceanography.

The fjord system and its surrounding waters are home to polar bears, musk oxen, Arctic foxes, narwhals, and numerous seabird colonies. The combination of sea ice, coastal tundra, and deep fjord waters creates one of the richest Arctic ecosystems accessible to visitors, though tourism to the area remains very limited due to its extreme remoteness.
