Makruk

description Makruk Overview

Makruk, widely known as Thai chess, is a traditional strategy board game that closely resembles the ancient Indian game of Chaturanga and the early Persian game of Shatranj. It is played on an 8x8 grid, but the pieces have different movement rules compared to international chess; notably, the queen, known as the "Met," can only move one square diagonally. The pawn also starts on the third rank and the game places a heavy emphasis on reaching a specific endgame countdown to prevent draws. Makruk is a popular pastime in Thailand and is recognized for its deep strategic complexity and slower pace.

help Makruk FAQ

How does the makruk queen move?

The met moves one square diagonally, making it far less powerful than the queen in international chess. This slower piece contributes to makruk's positional and endgame-oriented character.

How do pawns promote in makruk?

A pawn promotes when it reaches the sixth rank from its starting side rather than the final rank. It becomes a met, the limited diagonal-moving piece often translated as the queen.

How does the makruk bishop differ from a chess bishop?

The khon moves one square diagonally or one square straight forward. Unlike an international chess bishop, it cannot slide across multiple squares.

Why does makruk have special move-counting rules?

Makruk uses counting rules to prevent simplified endings from continuing indefinitely when one side has only a bare king. The permitted count depends partly on the remaining attacking material, so mating technique must be completed within a limit.
