Maple callus borer moth

description Maple callus borer moth Overview

Maple callus borer moth (Synanthedon acerni) is a North American clearwing moth in the family Sesiidae. Its larvae feed beneath the bark of maple trees, especially in the soft callus tissue that forms around wounds, and may bore through this tissue before pupating. The adult is a day-flying wasp-mimicking moth with mostly transparent wings, a form typical of many sesiids. The species is relevant to arborists because larval feeding is associated with injured ornamental and native maples.
