Waxy Monkey Tree Frog

Native to the dry savannas of the Gran Chaco in South America, this frog secretes a waxy lipid substance from its skin glands. It actively wipes this wax all over its body using its legs to prevent dehydration in the arid heat.

Unlike most frogs that hop, the waxy monkey tree frog (Phyllomedusa sauvagii) walks through the branches of trees using its opposable thumbs, much like a primate. This unique arboreal locomotion allows it to navigate its forested environment efficiently.

Like many amphibians, it does secrete defensive substances from its skin, but its waxy secretions are primarily meant to lock in moisture rather than deter predators. In controlled laboratory settings, these skin secretions have actually been studied for potential medicinal properties.
