Spiny-headed Tree Frog

description Spiny-headed Tree Frog Overview

The spiny-headed tree frog (*Triprion spatulatus*) is a species of hylid tree frog native to the Pacific coastal lowlands of Mexico. Its most distinguishing physical feature is a remarkably flattened, bony, spatula-shaped casque on its head. This adaptation serves a defensive function known as phragmosis, where the frog retreats into hollow tree branches or rocky crevices and uses its hardened head to plug the entrance, protecting its soft body from predators. The frog also possesses rough, spiny skin, which is reflected in its common name.
