Marmolada Cirque

The Marmolada Cirque is a dramatic glacial amphitheater situated within the Dolomite mountain range in northeastern Italy. It encompasses the largest glacier in the Dolomites, forming a significant geological feature. The cirque sits atop the Marmolada massif, which contains the highest peak in the range, Punta Penia.

During World War I, the rugged terrain of the Marmolada was the site of fierce mountain warfare between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces. The Austro-Hungarian army famously built an extensive "Ice City"—a vast network of tunnels and barracks carved directly into the glacier.
