The Marshall Islands is a sovereign Micronesian country in the central Pacific, made up of 29 coral atolls and five low-lying islands. Majuro is the capital and the main population and administrative center. The islands were part of the United States-administered Pacific Islands Trust Territory until independence in 1986 and remain linked to the United States through a Compact of Free Association. Marshallese and English are official languages, and local culture is rooted in ocean navigation, atoll communities, and Micronesian traditions.
