Mary Somerville was a Scottish mathematician and science writer who lived from 1780 to 1872 and became known for synthesizing complex scientific research for a broad educated audience. Her book Physical Geography, first published in 1848, surveyed the Earth's land, water, climate, plants, animals, and human populations as interconnected subjects. The work became a widely used text and contributed to the recognition of physical geography as a coherent field of study in Britain.
