description Massif Armoricain Overview

The Massif Armoricain, also called the Armorican Massif, is an ancient geological region in northwestern France, especially Brittany and nearby areas. It is not a single mountain peak but a broad upland and bedrock complex shaped by erosion over very old rocks that were affected by the Variscan, or Hercynian, mountain-building events. Granite, schist, sandstone, and other resistant rocks contribute to its relief and coastal landscapes. Geologists use the region to study the structure and long geological history of western France.
