The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 is a twin-engine narrowbody passenger aircraft developed for short- and medium-range airline service. It entered commercial service in 1965 and uses a low-wing design with engines mounted at the rear of the fuselage. The DC-9 formed the basis for the later MD-80 and MD-90 families, which extended the design through revised engines, fuselage lengths, and systems.
